How to Prepare a Handwriting Sample

A good handwriting sample helps ensure the most accurate and meaningful analysis. Please follow these simple instructions when preparing yours.

Before You Begin

Choose a time when you are relaxed and can sit comfortably at a table. Do not drink alcohol before or while writing, as it may affect your handwriting.

If you have several styles of handwriting, you may wish to include samples of each.

Preparing Your Sample

  1. Write naturally. Use your normal handwriting style. If you usually print, please also include a paragraph in cursive. If English is not your first language, include a paragraph in your native language as well.
  2. Choose your writing instrument. Use any pen or other writing instrument you prefer, except a pencil.
  3. Use unlined paper. Write on a full sheet of plain, unlined paper, such as photocopy paper. Do not draw lines or place the sheet over a lined surface.
  4. Write spontaneously. You may write about anything you wish, as though writing a letter. Do not copy text from a book or magazine, and do not write poetry. One page or more is ideal.
  5. Mention relevant medication. If you take medication that may affect your handwriting, please include that information.
  6. Note recent trauma. Please mention any physical or emotional trauma during the past twelve months or so that might affect your handwriting.
  7. Sign your name. Use your normal signature.
  8. Include basic information. State your approximate age, gender, and whether you are right- or left-handed.

Sending Your Handwriting Sample

Original handwriting is always preferred. I will email you the mailing address so you can send your original sample by post.

If mailing the original is not practical, the next best option is a color photo, or a scan at 300 DPI.
